It waits, just beyond the flickering of Bundox Explorer Camp’s paraffin lanterns and the soft light cast by the crackling log fire in the boma, black and velvety, like a blanket ready to be pulled up from the bottom of a welcoming bed.

That welcoming (and supremely comfortable) bed beckons in its beautifully and practically appointed safari tent, one of four that together make Bundox Explorer Camp a veritable tiny wonder. The old saying about great things coming in small packages applies, and in the case of this camp, the packaging is also worth mentioning because it goes to the heart of what sets it apart.

It’s best described as “natural luxury” – a pared-back elegance that makes the most of the wilderness around it to blend in perfectly with its surroundings, doing away with unnecessary (and expensive) frills to create a clean, modern take on the traditional safari experience. The luxury is in the organic flow of the design and the materials used to create it – light, unvarnished woods, wooden decking, unfussy concrete flooring and counters in the interactive kitchen-dining area, neutrally coloured canvas…

Bundox Explorer Camp is a lesson in simplicity and how rustic doesn’t mean surrendering high levels of comfort and exceptional standards of hospitality. It also emphasises how a great safari experience does not depend on the bells and whistles that so many safari camps and lodges fill space with. Décor, such that it is, should never overshadow the experience of being in the wilderness, surrounded by nature in all its wild and magnificent glory. Africa is the luxury that drives the modern safari experience – its vast landscapes and fauna and flora are all the decoration required.

Sleeping under canvas is how a safari should be experienced. Being able to hear distant lions calling and the wailing, whooping howl of hyenas on the prowl in the early hours of the morning is what it’s all about. That canvas needs to provide shelter, comfort and practical facilities – things that Bundox Explorer Camp provides in abundance. From the fabulously sprung mattresses on the steel-framed beds, decked in cool cotton and soft duvets, to the en-suite bathrooms with bucket showers and flushing loos, the tents hit the mark without overcooking it.

Hot water is available on demand to fill the bucket showers, and while the water pressure may be lacking, the impact on the environment is minimal in what is, after all, a water-scarce region. Solar energy ensures the bedside lights are on even when South Africa is experiencing load shedding and that the very welcome standing fan is always on standby to keep the tent aired and cool. Floors are covered in soft rugs and packing space is fit for purpose.

A Bundox Explorer Camp safari is not about spending time in your tent, no matter how comfortable. It’s about getting out there and exploring the wilderness of the Olifants West section of the Balule Private Nature Reserve, which you do twice a day, morning and late afternoon, for three or more hours at a time. Part of the Greater Kruger National Park, the landscapes are breathtaking, featuring rolling hills and valleys that make game drives akin to being on a natural switchback where the scenery changes constantly.

Located atop a hill with views out over the surrounding reserve and beyond to the distant northern Drakensberg Escarpment, which dominates the western horizon, the camp is in an ideal position. It enjoys direct access to the perennial Olifants River – a favourite spot for morning coffee, bush breakfasts and picnic lunches as well as the obligatory sundowners – and to the predator-rich drainage lines and koppies that surround it, forming a wildlife super-highway with the river at its epicentre.

Lion, leopard, painted wolves (African wild dogs) and hyena are sighted regularly here and it’s extremely unusual if you don’t see elephant because the area is filled with them! The small, pumped waterhole in front of the camp’s multi-level viewing deck is frequented by elephants virtually every single day, as well as a variety of other local game. This makes it the place to be in between game drives.

On the main deck, a small, farm-style reservoir serves as a quaint plunge pool and fits perfectly in its environment, respecting the precious resource that is water. No oversized, unnecessary rim-flow pool here, thank goodness. Just something that’s attractive, practical, innovative and fit for purpose in that it cools you off. Loungers under shady pergolas offer respite from the African sun, and a covered lounge area with an honesty bar and small library is great for relaxation, good conversation and siestas!

The “mess” area is the heart of the camp and a gathering point. It’s an open-plan kitchen and dining area where guests can sit at a long table and chat to the chef as meals are prepared. This is where breakfast is served after the morning game drive and where you can enjoy a light lunch before heading out on your afternoon/evening exploration. Dinner is either taken under the stars in the boma or here, with guests eating together around the communal table.

Sunlight filters through the tall, riparian trees that encircle Bundox Safari Lodge like a welcoming hug from Mother Nature. The dappled light plays on the winding pathways that weave their way through the riverine forest on a small, private sanctuary filled with wildlife and birdsong.

Every now and then a path leads off to a safari tent, cleverly concealed in the surrounding woodland. A nyala steps out onto the path and makes eye contact before heading back into the undergrowth, unperturbed by the human presence. High in the canopy a purple crested turaco calls before flying to its next perch, the bright red underside of its spectacular wings flashing as the sunlight catches them.

An intense sense of tranquillity fills every nook and cranny as you wind your way along a small, seasonal stream, stopping every now and then to watch and listen to wild Africa all around you. Up ahead the lodge reveals itself like a mirage appearing through the trees. Secluded corners beg you to sit down and unwind, smiling faces ask what they can do for you and you slowly begin to understand what it is to truly relax…

Mankwe Bush Lodge has a new name and a new look

Mankwe Tented Retreat is open for business and welcoming safari enthusiasts from across the world, with lots of big plans for 2023 and eager to make an impact on the African safari stage.

If you aren’t familiar with the name, that’s because fate has intervened in the evolution of this beautiful and refreshingly original safari lodge, which used to be known as Mankwe Bush Lodge.

Timing is everything when launching a new brand. It’s a lesson learned over and over again in the tourism industry and one that really hit home for Wildside Africa when it acquired Mankwe Bush Lodge and its associated campsite in Botswana back in 2016.

Located on the eastern edge of the Moremi Game Reserve with easy access to the legendary Khwai region, it was an obvious choice for the fledgling safari company’s first major acquisition in this beautiful Southern African country.

Filled with passion and enthusiasm for its new venture, Wildside Africa decided to close the lodge and significantly upgrade it and the camping facilities, scheduling a relaunch for August 2016 – the start of Botswana’s peak season. What happened next was completely unexpected, but another life lesson for all concerned… A day before the opening, a freak fire decimated the lodge, destroying all of the brand-new communal areas and laying waste to Wildside Africa’s plans.

Efforts at temporary fixes proved impractical, so the decision was taken to start from scratch and undertake a full rebuild and rebrand. That arduous process took three years but resulted in the unveiling of the renamed Mankwe Tented Retreat at the start of 2020. Weeks later a conflagration of a different sort struck – the world shut down as the COVID-19 pandemic took hold. The rest, as they say, is history.

Mankwe Tented Retreat’s grand entrance onto the global tourism stage was halted yet again. Its luxurious new tents were mothballed and the gorgeous, flowing communal areas overlooking vast expanses of mopane woodland and pristine African wilderness stood empty and silent.

Slowly, the world emerged from the ravages of the pandemic and Mankwe Tented Retreat cautiously but optimistically opened its proverbial doors to a significantly different tourism landscape. In survival mode, thoughts of grand relaunches and fresh brand positioning went out of the window as the travel world took stock of the untold damage wrought upon it. Until now, that is.

As tourism in Africa rebounds and African safaris once more hog the global tourism limelight, Mankwe Tented Retreat is welcoming the waiting world yet again. A phoenix twice over, having risen from both literal and metaphoric ashes, Mankwe Bush Lodge is no more – replaced by a reimagining of safari luxury that draws inspiration from the incredible wilderness around it.

The gentle giants of the African bush

When it comes to Africa’s wildlife “star attractions” it’s hard to beat the iconic African elephant in terms of size, intelligence and personality. Indeed, the thrill of seeing these legendary animals in their natural habitat is one of the highlights of a Big Five safari…

With so many amazing species in the African wilderness it’s always hard to choose a single favourite and much easier to compile a list of animals you love. Chances are that the African elephant, Loxodonta Africana, is somewhere close to the top of that list, thanks to its ranking as one of the world’s most recognised and admired creatures.

The world’s largest living land animal, the African elephant is perhaps the most enigmatic member of the Big Five – a grouping of the most dangerous animals to approach on foot that’s a legacy of the early, colonial days of safari. Along with the leopard, lion, buffalo and rhino, in modern safari terms the Big Five are now the most exciting animals to approach in an open safari vehicle and possibly encounter on a walking safari.

The big show…

So what makes the elephant so special? Let’s start with the elephant in the room (pardon the pun) – its size! At a whopping 9m from trunk to tail, weighing in at more than six tons and standing as high as 4m tall at the shoulders, an adult bull elephant is about as impressive as it gets in the African bush. In fact, “ellies” are record breakers of note – they have the longest gestation period of any mammal at 22 months, have the biggest ears of any living animal with accute hearing and the ability to cool the elephant’s entire body down, thanks to the network of veins and blood vessels in them, and have the biggest brains of all terrestrial land mammals, including the greatest volume of cerebral cortex!

As you’d imagine in a head that can weigh a massive 400kgs, the elephant’s brain power matches its mass of around 6kg (four times larger than a human brain). With three times the neurons of the human brain at a staggering 250-billion (compared to our 70-billion) this is a sophisticated thinking machine and it’s widely accepted that elephants are among the most clever, emotionally complex, social and empathetic animals on the planet, including humans!

Family life…

This intelligence gives rise to an equally advanced societal structure that’s centred around family. Elephants live in large, multi-generational herds of related individuals presided over by a dominant female known as a matriarch. Bull elephants leave the family unit when they reach sexual maturity at between 10 and 12 years old, teaming up with older bulls who literally teach them what it means to be an adult bull elephant in something akin to a boot camp for teenaged elephant boys!

When they have acquired the skills and understanding they need to survive as adult bulls, they venture off on a life that’s spent mostly alone or in small, loose-knit groups of other bulls, wandering often over thousands of kilometres in huge, circuitous routes across their home ranges. They shadow breeding herds, especially when there is a cow in season, and periodically go through a surge in testosterone called musth which triggers a need to mate.

Female elephants, or cows, stay in the family herd for their entire lives, living with their relatives and offspring. They reach sexual maturity a little later than bulls at around 13 and can continue breeding for the duration of their 70-year life span. The family herd is a co-operative of closely-knit members who help to care for one another and their young. The matriarch makes the major decisions about where to feed, where to drink and co-ordinating the group movements as well as responding to possible threats.

Meet Simanga, food magician extraordinaire!

He's forging a stellar path as a pioneering safari chef

For young Simanga Shongwe, music was everything growing up in Nhlazatshe, a small rural town in Mpumalanga close to the South African border with Eswatini. He had dreams of becoming the next, great South African sound engineer, but the reality of needing a steady income introduced him to food, and a new career path…

“I knew about the pressure of finding work in the music business so when I left school with my Matric certificate I decided to be responsible and enrolled in a chef’s course at the culinary school in Thulamahashe, where my mom had moved when I was 16,” says the softly spoken Simanga.

“The possibility of becoming a chef never really crossed my mind, but I knew I had to have a vocation to fall back on and a way to earn a living, so cooking became a backup plan. But I completely fell in love with it,” he laughs.

“The more I learned, the more I loved it. Being around food was amazing and I became the first chef from Nhlazatshe. My mum is in the restaurant industry too so understood and supported me in what I was doing. So I gave it my best shot and graduated, applying for a placement in local lodges which included Bundox Safari Lodge.

I got a six-month placement at Royal Malewane in 2019. It was a lot of pressure because it’s a famous, exclusive international lodge, but I rose to the challenge. They employed me after the placement but then COVID-19 came and I was retrenched. Instead of feeling sorry for myself, I used that time to improve my skills and teach myself new things, especially basic cooking. So I went back to culinary school,” says Simanga.

“When tourism opened up again and Bundox Safari Lodge re-opened, I was offered a position there and I leapt at the chance. I shadowed the Head Chef there for a while, learning the ropes, and then they asked me to come to Bundox Explorer Camp Bundox Explorer Camp as a chef.”

Simanga turns 24 in November 2022 so he’s understandably elated to have been given such a responsibility at such a young age. “It was a challenge to come to Bundox Explorer Camp on my own, being my own boss as a chef and use the skills I have learned. But I rose to the challenge and found myself growing and becoming more creative. I think coming here and being alone has been a good thing as it has stretched me and made me more independent and open to new things,” he says.

“I get my inspiration from things like Master Chef and from online foodie platforms and threads. It’s an art and I love putting creativity into everything I do. I want our guests to go “wow” when I place the plate in front of them,” he smiles, shyly.

Was it hard taking up a chef’s position in a camp surrounded by the African wilderness and packed with the Big Five? “Definitely,” he laughs. “But now I am really enjoying being here in the bush. I’m constantly challenged here, not just because it took me out of my comfort zone personally, but also professionally.

“It’s a small and simple bush camp, without the luxury of a lot of utilities and facilities, so I have to be inventive. And I love being here surrounded by nature. But when I go home I find it hard to adjust to all the noise and voices and music! It gets on my nerves! I’m used to the peace and quiet of the wilderness now!

“I am a very shy person, so at first it was hard to work in an open-plan interactive kitchen in front of guests. But the other staff are here when the guests are on game drives so I adjusted to it. Now I love it. I feel like I am in charge and in a cooking show, showing the guests how to prepare amazing food!”

Simanga has a younger brother and a sister who lives with his mum and his grandmother. “I cook for them when I go home and they enjoy my cooking. But often I have to simplify things and make their favourite foods for them as well as some of my own. My family also doesn’t understand why I love it so much out here in the bush. They think I am strange,” he laughs out loud.

So what now for Simanga? “I would love to do a pastry course now and expand my skills some more. My goals are to become a good all-around chef and to start my own thing like making biscuits and pastries to sell in my community.

“But for now I love what I do and where I do it. It’s a blessing. I like the challenge of having to work with guests’ dietary requirements and do vegetarian and vegan dishes for them. It stretches me and makes me learn new things. I do research and a lot of thinking to create something amazing for them.

“Challenges are good. They make you grow as a person and as a chef. I like to be pushed, especially in a small location like this which makes you creative and often you have to pull rabbits out of hats to do something amazing! I am a food magician really. Not just a chef!

“So life is good and I feel like I have found my passion and that the horizons open to me are endless. If I had followed sound recording I would never have had these experiences in my life, so I am very glad that I found cooking and got the chance to be here with Bundox.”

A guide to packing for your African safari

Some hot tips on what to bring with you

How do you pack the perfect safari bag? Packing can be one of the biggest headaches when going on an African safari, especially when you are a first-time visitor to Africa… So let’s try and take some of the strain (and pain) out of the process and give you some sterling advice on your safari “look”!

Get the right bag!

Choosing a lightweight yet hardy travel bag that can easily survive the rigours of air travel is the key to successful packing. Get the bag right, and the rest falls nicely into place.

We generally recommend duffel bags as the shape of choice. They’re practical and easy to carry and offer a good space-to-weight ratio. When you travel with us to South Africa’s Greater Kruger, you’ll be travelling on scheduled aircraft with a normal 20kg weight allowance or in your own, self-drive vehicle.

But if you do a circuit with us and fly into Mankwe Tented Camp in Botswana, for example, you’ll most likely be on a small plan with a more limited capacity for luggage and a lighter weight limit, so it’s always best to pack as lightly, and cleverly as possible! So it’s best to know how much your chosen bag weighs empty and build your packing list from there.

What to pack

Once you have your bag it’s time to put stuff in it! When it comes to clothing there are some easy guidelines to follow…

You can get clothes washed: Our lodges and camps all offer laundry services, which allows you to recycle your clothing effortlessly if you are staying for more than two nights.

Muted colours: When it comes to clothing, let’s start with colours… Opt for neutral, earth tones like khaki, beige, brown and grey as these blend in effortlessly when you’re out on an open safari vehicle. You can add in some muted blues and pastels but try to stay away from white as much as possible, even though it looks amazing it makes you stand out while on game activities.

Avoid dark colours because they absorb the heat, which in summer can be rather on the warm side!

Seasons: In Southern Africa, the seasons are the opposite of the northern hemisphere. Spring runs from September to November, summer from December to February, autumn from March to May and winter from June to August.

Autumn and winter, as well as the start of spring, are the driest months, with the annual rains arriving usually around October and November. This is when the heat builds up. Once the rains arrive, it gets hot and humid, with spectacular storms that have to be seen to be believed!

In winter the early mornings and evenings are cold. So you’re going to need protection on game activities in the form of a beanie-style hat, gloves and a scarf, as well as a lightweight fleece or puffer-style jacket, long pants and closed shoes or boots.

Layer it up: The mix-and-match, the layered approach really works. Choose items of clothing that offer a variety of outfits and that can be easily layered to add warmth where necessary. Even in the peak of summer, it can get chilly in the early mornings, so make sure you have a lightweight sweater or jacket on hand. Long-sleeved shirts are also a great idea as they offer protection from the sun and biting insects too, and add warmth under a top layer.

Cosmetics, toiletries and personal items: Keep your toiletries bag to a minimum by using small containers that will provide enough shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, etc, for your trip, rather than big bottles. You’ll need sunscreen and a good moisturiser as well as any medicines you will need during your trip. It’s always a good idea to make copies of any prescriptions just in case you are asked about any scheduled medicines you may have.

Getting it in the bag…

Everyone has their own way of packing, but there are some universal hacks that are perfect for getting your gear into your safari bag with room to spare.

First of all – it’s a good idea to lay out everything you want to pack on a flat surface like a dining table or your bed and have a good, hard look at it. Ask yourself if you absolutely need every single thing you have earmarked for packing and do a last-minute “purge” of unnecessary items.

Then it’s time to start packing. You can put shoes in plastic Ziploc-style bags (or recycled shopping bags) to keep them separate from clothing. It’s up to you how you fold your clothing. We love rolling items as it helps with space and also reduces creasing to a minimum.

Sometimes it’s a good idea to either double bag or wrap your toiletries bag in a recycled shopping bag to prevent any possible chance of leakages. Remember that baggage handlers don’t always treat bags with the respect they deserve!

Camera gear and other essentials

Try to find carry-on bags that are practical, spacious and easy to carry, with easy-to-access compartments for your travel documents, devices and personal items. Backpacks can be a good option in this regard and are great for taking on game activities with essentials like additional clothing/jackets, water bottles, hats etc.

Don’t forget your camera, and a good pair of binoculars is always a good idea!
