Your expedition in detail
Day 1
Dumela! Welcome to beautiful Botswana!
On arrival at Maun International Airport you will be met and checked in to your internal flight to Mopiri in the legendary Okavango Delta. It’s a 40-minute flight to Mopiri Airstrip where your guide will greet you and take you on a short 10 minute boat ride to the lodge, arriving in good time to check in and enjoy some lunch before heading out on the water.
Mopiri is located on the north west of the Okavango Delta and is surrounded by a network of permanent lagoons and channels, meaning that exploring is impossible by vehicle! So you’ll be taking to the water and discovering the magic of this fascinating wetland by gliding effortlessly through paradise on a safari boat. Walking is also offered, allowing you to discover the various islands in the vicinity.
Returning to the lodge, you’ll share drinks and stories by the fireside before dinner is served on a deck overlooking the water, under a canopy of billions of twinkling stars.
Day 2
Before dawn breaks, the smell of fresh coffee rouses you from your sleep as adventure beckons.
Gather in the dining area for a hot cuppa and watch the sunrise over the World Heritage Site, before heading out into the Okavango. Watch out for hippo, crocodiles and the secretive sitatunga antelope and enjoy the rich birdlife of the Delta as you go. You may even see the fabulous Pel’s fishing owl – one of the birding world’s top ticks!
You’ll return to the camp for breakfast and spend time recharging, either by the sparkling pool or in a shady spot overlooking the lagoon that is home to a rich variety of wildlife.
After lunch it’s time to explore once more. Try a spot of fishing, a birding walk, or relax on board the double story and potter around the lagoon with a sundowner.
Raise a glass to the setting sun and sit back and watch night fall over the Okavango, sharing tales around the campfire before tucking into a wonderful dinner.
Day 3
Head out into the Delta for the day to explore the channels and waterways of this unique and incredible landscape.
Stop off to explore remote islands, exploring at your own pace, discovering the wilderness with the help of knowledgeable guides – trying to spot the tiniest well-camouflaged reed-frog, identifying the calls of iconic bird species and finding the larger species such as hippo and crocodile that reside in the water.
Take a mokoro ride through the papyrus-lined channels, enjoying the beauty of the Okavango as you go. You’ll return to the lodge in time for sundowners and a wonderful dinner under the stars.
Day 4
Rise early and enjoy one last cruise on the lagoon and channels of the Okavango before tucking into breakfast and making your way to the airstrip for your short connecting flight to Mankwe Tented Retreat on the eastern edge of the Moremi Game Reserve.
On arrival at the Khwai Airstrip, you’ll be met by your guide and transferred to Mankwe Tented Retreat in an open safari vehicle, game-watching en-route. Enjoy a refreshing welcome drink before being taken to your gorgeous tent to settle in and orientate yourself.
Lunch is served in the restaurant overlooking the African bush, after which it’s time to head out on your first game drive, looking for the predators and other iconic wildlife species that make this wonderful region of Botswana home.
You’ll stop for sundowners in the bush, watching the sun dip towards the horizon before returning to Mankwe Tented Retreat for a sumptuous, starlit dinner in the beautiful boma.
Day 5
Wake up just before the sun rises, as early light begins to break on the horizon and the wilderness around Mankwe Tented Retreat fills with the dawn chorus. Coffee and rusks will be served on the main deck before you depart on a morning game drive, looking for the signs and tracks that tell us what happened during the night. You may be lucky enough to spot lion or leopard, or find buffalo as they begin to stir…
Sightings of elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, cheetah, and painted wolves (African wild dogs) are regular here, thanks to Mankwe Tented Retreat’s excellent location on the eastern edge of the Moremi Game Reserve, gateway to the Khwai and greater Chobe National Park regions.
Stop for coffee along the way, giving you the chance to stretch your legs before returning to camp for a leisurely breakfast and some rest and relaxation. With two swimming pools to choose from and lots of space for the whole family, you can enjoy lunch on the deck and a siesta before heading out on an afternoon game drive.
When you return, enjoy drinks around the boma fire before indulging in a three-course dinner under the stars.
Day 6
Wake up with the sun and embark on another adventure into the African wilderness around Mankwe Tented Retreat, steadily ticking off sightings of the diverse species of wildlife in this area as you go. You’ll stop for coffee in a scenic spot and stretch your legs before making your way back to the camp for breakfast.
Find a shady spot next to a pool or in the lovely lounge area and curl up with a good book or some lively conversation with friends and family before enjoying a leisurely lunch with views of forever.
As the heat of the day begins to dissipate you’ll head out once more into the bush to see what you can find on an afternoon game drive, enjoying traditional sundowners one last time.
Watch the “bush TV” in the boma before tucking into a wonderful dinner, sharing stories of the day’s adventures and reminiscing about your amazing safari with us.
Day 7
Every journey comes to an end, and yours will end with another wonderful sunrise in the African bush. Stay in bed a little later and enjoy coffee on your private deck overlooking the wilderness around you. Or head out on one last morning game drive.
After breakfast you’ll be collected for your two-hour road transfer back to Maun International Airport for your onward journey.
We hope to see you again! Remember your journey will never end with Bundox Safari Co, this is just the beginning!
